The spray has a ton of great uses for bikes, but when it comes to bike chains, it depends on what you’re using it for. WD-40 is primarily a degreaser—a solvent that removes contaminants from an object, which helps to protect it from rust and corrosion. So it can effectively clean and degrease your bike chain, and is especially good at removing any debris, gunk, and rust that is attached to the links to help it get moving again. But while the product is advertised as a lubricant in addition to its other uses, it doesn’t contain enough lubricant to keep your bike chain running smoothly, and the minimal amount that it contains isn’t good quality anyway. When your bike inevitably finds itself in the rain, the WD-40’s lubricant will easily wash off, leaving the chain in worse condition than before.
Your bike chain should be cleaned and lubed regularly, especially if you ride often. You can spot-clean the chain while it’s still on your bike, by following this process:
WD-40 is considered the ultimate multi-purpose spray, capable of de-squeaking hinges, loosening joints, and a whole lot more. It’s one of the most common products you’ll find in somebody’s toolkit, but is WD-40 good for bike chains? Good quality lubricants include Smoove Lube, Rock n Roll Gold, or Green Oil Wet Lube. WD-40’s 3-IN-ONE range does include a few products that will work better as a lubricant than the original WD-40, but you’re better off getting a lubricant designed specifically for bike chains. In summary, WD-40 is great for cleaning and degreasing your chain, but doesn’t work well as a lubricant. It will provide some small amount of lubrication, but nowhere near enough for your bike chain to run smoothly. It’s best to use a high-quality, bike-specific lubricant instead.
A dry chain has a lot more friction, which wears it down more quickly, and leads to rust and corrosion. Over time, the chain will become more rigid, which impairs gear shifting, wears down the derailleur assemblies and drivetrain cogs, and can eventually snap. So WD-40 is a great option for cleaning and degreasing your chain, but you should always wash the remnants away with soap and water, and then apply a good quality lubricant afterwards. Remember that WD-40 is an all-purpose spray, so is designed to do a decent job at a large number of things, but rarely a fantastic job at one thing.

Engine oil quantity varies with the engine size and design of the motorcycle. The cost multiplies with every litre and seasoned riders keep a spare pack with them when going on longer expeditions. Topping up is a necessary part for slightly older engines and also for those bikes which have surprisingly long service intervals.
High-performance motorcycles use synthetic engine oil for their superb lubrication property and high-temperature resistance. It is the most expensive type of engine oil and could only be used in two cases. The first person who should consider synthetic oil is the rider who burns a full fuel tank every day on the highway. The second is the one who lives in areas with extreme temperatures. Both cases require extra engine care and synthetic oil does that for the rider. A regular rider with 30 kilometres of daily riding will not need this oil as they will reach their destination before the actual benefit of the oil starts. Should you lube before or after ride?
Lube and clean your chain after every ride if you are riding in wet, snowy, salty, conditions, or conditions where there’s more dirt and especially sand. If you are riding in dusty, sandy conditions, you can use dry or Teflon-based lubes, which don’t attract abrasive dirt and sand as much as oil-based lube does.

What is the difference between dry and wet bike lube?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF LUBE? Wet – Wet lube is a lube meant for riding in wet or muddy conditions. It last long but can attract dirt and buildup overtime. Dry – Dry lube is a lightweight lube that can be applied multiple times; however, it does not last long and washes off easily with water.
Revolubes specialises in making lubricants for the bike, motorsports and fishing sectors. It is a wet chain lubricant (meaning this isn’t a wax lube that dries, rather than a lube for rainy days) and it has performed fantastically during ZF testing.There are a vast array of chain lubricants on the market these days. Independent testers like the experts at Zero Friction Cycling have a wealth of information and data on the subject. All of the drip lubes listed in our guide have been independently tested by Zero Friction and can be backed up with a set of results. Any one of these chain lubricants will really help care for your drivetrain.
I then prepared brand new or very lightly used chains so they were as clean as I could possibly get them using white spirit and isopropyl alcohol and applied each lubricant as per the manufacturer’s instructions. I then spent some time riding each chain to see how the lubricant performed in the real world, noting drivetrain noise, speed and longevity.
CeramicSpeed UFO All Conditions drip lubricant is the third generation of the UFO drip lube series. It’s low wear and super fast, perfect for a race day chain or performance training and riding. If you really stay on top of chain maintenance this could be perfect for you.Like many of the lubricants here, Revolubes recommends you apply the lubricant to a thoroughly cleaned chain. They now have a useful prep and application guide you can follow.
AbsoluteBlack’s Graphenlube is the most expensive lubricant in the guide and has been used by Tadej Pogačar to win at least one of his two Tour de France titles. It’s a wax-based lubricant containing high-quality Graphene. It does have a black colour when dry so you don’t get that super shiny chain look with this one. It’s best applied to a very clean or new chain and a submersive application is required first.Tungsten All Weather packs a punch despite its small 50ml size. It is really good value, if you prefer to stick to budget or cheaper chain lubes and spend your money on upgrades you can almost have the best of both worlds with this product. Silca Synergetic is along with Revolubes another wet lubricant. It is an oil-based lubricant that contains Tungsten disulfide (the same as the Tru Tension lube). You can see the Tungsten disulfide collected at the bottom of the bottle before shaking it up to mix. The lubricant will change from a clear colour to a dark grey/black when mixed up. Finding the right chain lube can feel a bit like trying to find the best road bike saddle for you; the lube that will perform the best for you will depend largely on where you ride, how much you ride, and how often you clean and or re-lube.
Should you wet or dry bike lube in winter?
Conventional wisdom points to a wet lube for wet winter cycling, and a dry lube for summer cycling when it’s dry and conditions are good. It’s a good rule of thumb to follow and you won’t go wrong if you choose this approach.
We would recommend simply splitting chain lubricants into hot melt immersive waxes and drip lubricants. I.e lubricants that come out of a bottle as a liquid and go from there based on your requirements.Most of the products listed are supported by dedicated cleaners from the respective manufacturers which helps. We would recommend removing the chain from the bike for cleaning. If you haven’t done it before it may mean learning a new job and investing in some chain link removal pliers, these do just look like a small pair of pliers and undo a chain’s connector link. A chain can be removed in a few seconds, it’s a simple job.A good example is this, imagine getting your chain perfectly clean after several baths in White Spirit, letting it dry and then applying a tiny drop of lubricant to each chain link. If that lube doesn’t penetrate the link properly, you’ll harm your chain when you use it, and the first few miles could see very high wear rates as unlubricated metal surfaces mash together due to a lack of lubricant within. Waxed-based drip lubes are popular because they work well in both wet and dry conditions and for on and off-road applications. Wax lubes are made up of friction modifiers and or products like tungsten disulfide which are often emulsified in a carrier fluid; the liquid helps the particles get where they need to be and dries, leaving just the wax inside. Due to the nature of wax, it dries and doesn’t attract much grit and can also support additives like Teflon, while coating and protecting metal components. Rex Black Diamond is the Finnish company’s top tier drip lubricant and is the drip version of the Black Diamond hot melt wax. The small bottle will go a long way and perform brilliantly.
Wet lubes as the name suggests are physically wet by nature and don’t dry like wax lube products. They tend to be similar to heavy oil or light grease in makeup. These will be long-lasting and stand up well to torrential downpours but also attract dirt and contamination more easily. So there is a balance to be struck here. Our advice would be to forget the old adage ’wet lube for wet riding’. Technology and the products on the market have moved on.For the low cost per bottle, especially in the UK. This should be one of the drip chain lubricants you should consider for all-around riding protection. It comes in the smallest bottle in the guide, but the affordable price and high performance mean it should still last a decent amount of time.
Silca Synergetic is the brand’s top wet lubricant and was initially designed for F1 applications. If you want the familiarity of a wet drip lubricant to apply to your drivetrain then give Syngergetic a look.
Rex Black Diamond lube is the drip lubricant sibling of the Rex Black Diamond hot wax. It’s a dark-coloured wax lubricant that the Finnish company says is suited to road, gravel and mtb riding.
If you do want to up your game and try to use the best possible product to increase efficiency and lengthen drivetrain life, then start with cleaning. You will need to start with a properly cleaned chain. Investigate what degreasing products you want to use to get your chain sparkling, and head to Zero Friction Cycling which has more information than we could possibly include here on the subject and this will enable you to find the best lubricant for your riding and budget. Revolubes is a high-performing wet lubricant that has been developed with a great deal of care. Follow the application instructions below and you can enjoy one of the smoothest-feeling chain lubes. When a chain is dirty, contamination is present in each chain link in the form of metal particles, dirt or sand etc. These contaminants are suspended within a chain lubricant, specifically the carrier the lubricant is held in, and essentially form a grinding paste which will just wear your chain out from the inside. Even the best road bike groupsets will be ruined in just a few thousand miles if chain wear is terminal.In short, it’s up to you whether you want to invest more in a good chain lubricant, which may have a higher initial cost than others. It is worth thinking about, especially for mid and higher-tier groupsets which most performance road bikes generally have.
Its wax-based formula is mixed with water. Smoove performed well in Zero Friction testing but it is a lubricant that needs a little more work for it to adequately penetrate a chain once applied (similar to GraphenLube from AbsoluteBlack), we have a section on this at the bottom of the page for you to read.
The idea behind Super Secret Drip lube from Silca is that you’re getting pretty close to immersive wax benefits and performance but in a drip lubricant from a bottle.
By all means, apply a wet lube for a torrential ride, but make sure you clean your chain effectively afterwards. Don’t just reapply a fresh layer of lubricant on top of the grit and dirt that’s on your chain. The same goes for ’dry’ lube.
An affordable and clean running wax emulsion chain lubricant. If you’re looking for a great, wax all-rounder, Smoove is a product you should consider. Apply in the big chainring and largest sprocket to open up your chain links that little bit more and aid chain penetration.With this done, you can submerge and clean the chain in chain cleaner, white spirit or your chosen degreaser. Doing this with a new chain is far easier than trying to clean a dirty chain. A resealable Tupperware container is excellent for agitating the submerged chain, if you haven’t done this before you will be amazed at what comes out of the chain. It may take an overnight soak or a few rounds of cleaning to remove all of the factory packing greases and get the chain clean.
Smoove is a white-coloured wax emulsion drip lubricant from the South African company Smoove. It is 100% biodegradable and solvent free. It is cheap to buy and the 125ml bottle will last a long time making it really good value, with one bottle lasting for over 10,000km of testing.AbsolteBlack Graphen wax has won at least one Tour de France with Pog and lasts an incredibly long time between applications. It’s expensive initially but will last you a long time and perform very well.
After initially stripping a new chain to go on my winter bike, I followed AbsoluteBlack’s application instructions and used the provided resealable bag that comes with the chain lube, this does make the application really easy and mess-free. Pouring the best part of the bottle out into a bag feels odd but after agitating the chain in the lubricant and letting it soak for a while, most of the contents are then poured back into the bottle, it then becomes obvious this chain lubricant will last you a very long time.
Revolubes is one of the best wet lubricants ZF has tested, especially for drier road conditions. It’s long-lasting per application and is relatively cheap, stays clean and feels really smooth to ride.The small Black Diamond bottle uses a fine applicator, it is a little thicker and stickier out of the bottle than its competitors. Rex recommends working the lubricant into a chain with your fingers to aid penetration and to get it into the rollers.The Tru Tension All Weather is easy to apply with the fine nozzle and has a slightly grey colour out of the bottle. ZF testing found it to have very good wear rates across lubricant testing and a very good ability to clear contamination. Making this an excellent option if you ride off-road or in fouler condition.Graphenlube is incredibly long-lasting per application, up to 1800km. Low friction and has been found to perform very well in the wet. If you can live with the initial outlay, it will do very well for you. ZF was also involved in this lubricant prototype testing.
Effetto Mariposa Flower Power is a vegan lubricant produced using sunflower seed oils. It’s durable and long-lasting and set a cost to run record in testing. It runs a little darker so keep this in mind if you like a sparkling drivetrain.
Honestly, things may just boil down to how interested you are in drivetrain cleaning and the world of chain lubes. Some riders just aren’t hugely bothered about having a mucky chain that may wear out a little faster and that’s absolutely fine.
You can also use an ultrasonic cleaner do to this, but using a resealable container is cheaper. When the cleaning solution is running clear with no discolouration or contaminants you know your chain is clean.
Super Secret drip is excellent at penetrating the links of a clean chain meaning it’s working optimally from the get-go for you. Performance wise it keeps a drivetrain very clean and has very low recorded wear rates. It is also compatible with Silca Hot Melt and Mspeedwax hot melt waxes.I researched independent testing website reports to help me narrow down the best-performing drip lubricants that had been independently tested, guaranteeing the inclusion of proven, top-level products in this guide. The downside to wax lubes is they take a bit more initial work to apply and maintain. If a chain and cassette are worn out after 3000 miles, for example, this could be within a year’s worth of riding for plenty of cyclists. Using Tungsten Disulfide which, without getting too nerdy, is a very smooth and slippery component that’s perfect for a chain lubricant. So slippery in fact the lube almost wants to slide off your chain links when applying.
The one thing I wasn’t overly keen on was the applicator design, I found it a bit faffy and would prefer just a regular nozzle to apply the lubricant. After thoroughly prepping the KMC chain on a gravel bike I’m testing I applied Smoove and left it to set overnight. Once on, it runs really quietly which I have loved and the chain is spotless with minimal waxy buildup on pulley wheels etc. It does set with a degree of tackiness, so you may need to be hotter on maintenance if you are using it for a lot of gravel or off-road riding.Flower power wax by Effetto Mariposa is a top-performing yet eco-friendly drip chain lubricant formulated in part using oil from Sunflower seeds. The wax emulsion is water-based, and uses a high sunflower wax content alongside other naturally occurring waxes, making it vegan too.
Penetration issues in chain lubricants refer to the lubricant not being able to penetrate inside all of a chain link to provide adequate lubrication and protection. This can be due to tight chain tolerances where the lubricant can’t physically get in there or a lack of lubricant in the first place.
CeramicSpeed updated its UFO drip lubricant this year and released an updated third version. Ditching the black and white bottle for a burgundy one – though we are most interested in what’s inside!With a claimed application duration of roughly 600km, the lubricant set a new record during ZF testing as the lowest cost-to-run lubricant. In a comparison of wear rates from all the ZF testing blocks and conditions, Flower Power emerged as the cheapest lubricant to run with an Ultegra 11s groupset. The goal with any chain lubricant is to have to replace drivetrain components as little as possible. This is the age-old classic. The stock answer generally tended to be ’wet for wet rides dry for dry rides’. But this is outdated now as mentioned above. Both wet and dry lubricants can be really damaging to your chain regardless of conditions if the chain is carrying a lot of contamination already. All of the lubricants in this guide are excellent. Their differences are highlighted depending on what conditions you are riding in. But any lubricant from our guide will perform very well compared to poorer lubricants on the market.For all-around riding, Flower Power is an excellent option that’s green and affordable. The only potential drawback is that your drivetrain won’t look as clean during use compared to some products in this guide.

If you’re applying a drip chain lube i.e. one from a bottle in liquid form. Just apply a decent drop of oil to each chain link. Some manufacturers recommended applying a lubricant twice, so heed their own instructions in some cases. You don’t need any lubricant on the cassette or chainrings directly. Wipe off any excess lubricant on the outside of a chain with a cloth, too little in the name of cleanliness and you won’t get very good lubricant penetration into each link which will actually increase wear. So disregard videos online where people are applying the tiniest drop of oil to a spotless chain. Wear rates just after this can be some of the highest.
Silca Synergetic was first developed as a lubricant for F1 applications and there is some interesting info on this on the Silca Website. It has tested as just about the top wet lubricant during ZF testing. It keeps the drivetrain pretty clean in use and has good application longevity.ZF has tested the slightly less premium Rex Domestique drip lubricant. Black Diamond is said to contain more premium friction modifiers so should perform more strongly. 100% of Black Diamond’s content is also a lubricant, not water which will evaporate, or a poor carrier which can trap contamination. I applied Super Secret drip on a freshly prepared new YBN chain for my track bike, the nozzle could be a little finer to aid application and you do get a little bit of mess from drips due to the thin consistency and slipperiness so take your time when applying. Lean your bike up against a wall with the chain side facing out. Grab your rag and hold it loosely around the bottom section of the chain while turning your pedals backwards with your other hand. This cleans dirt off the chain before applying the lube. Be careful when doing this to not suck your hand into the chainrings! Pay attention and hold the chain loosely. 1) A clean rag and 2) chain lube. There are many brands of chain lube on the market and all of them work. Just make sure you use something that is made specifically for bicycle chains. Can’t I just spray WD40 on my chain? Nope. It’s not a lubricant. Head into your local bike shop and ask them what they recommend. For less than $10 you can have a bottle of lube that will last nearly a lifetime. The procedure is fairly simple. Hold the chain lube bottle so that it is dripping on the rollers in the center of the chain while pedaling backwards like you did for cleaning the chain. Do this for a few rounds to ensure that you’ve applied lube to all sections of the chain. Looked at some standard grease in a hardware shop at the weekend – decided to send off for some TF2, a fraction of the quantity, because it’s labelled as ”for bikes”.
hawkinspeter replied to Argus Tuft: I’ve tried paraffin wax myself, but I didn’t use any solvent with it. I used to melt the wax in a small frying pan and put the chain in it. Then, sprinkle some micronised graphite on top of the chain and put some paraffin wax granules on top so that they melt and carry the graphite into the chain. Swill around a bit and then remove the chain and let it cool. Once cool, spend a bit of time removing excess wax and flexing each joint of the chain and then pop it on the bike.Where wet lubes have the trump card is in sub-optimal conditions. The wet lube is more durable and sticks to the chain better when riding in the rain, and it’s a good year-round option for UK cyclists. Because it’s more durable it needs less frequent applications and is good for very long rides.

StraelGuy: I generally get around a thousand miles a chain on my winter bike and I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with lube regimes. I used to be an avid cleaner but chains seem to last longer if you use wet lube, NEVER strip / degrease the chain, add one more drip of lube per link every two or three rides and keep the outside clean using an old t-shirt. Just my $0.02.visionset: How many miles you get out of chain is irrelevent unless you also state oyur maintenance philosophy. If you are running the whole drive train into the ground (or at least cahin and cassette) you probably can get 10,000 miles out of it. No one is gonna be impressed with the shfiting on said drive train after say 3000 miles. Or alternatively you intend to keep your cassette throun many chains, and you can for probably 10 chains if you wear to 100.2% Yep that’s just 0.2% of wear. equates to about 5mm of ’stretch’. Over this and you start to shag the cassette. If you are on Ultegra or better then the latter approach is cost effective and always a crisp change to boot.
”After around 120 miles of ’ride and wipe,’ the amount of dirt coming off was much reduced, but the chain was still running smoothly. If you take quiet running as a proxy for low wear (noise = friction = wear), this seems a very effective lubricant. Oh and that was periodically degreasing and washing the chain completely and then relubing with car full synthetic oil. I wouldn’t do it on a spendy chain but then I wouldn’t use those spendy chains on a bike that gets taken out in all the shitty conditions the UK weather will throw at you.
Decathlon 03 Bike Chain Oil is a cheaper option than many lubes out there. It’s easily applied and will keep your chain and derailleur running smoothly. For the price of £2.99 there isn’t really a bad thing to say about this lubricant. You probably won’t go through it twice as fast as anything twice the price, even with weekly applications (more so during wet/winter weather), making it an excellent choice. I’ve now switched over to using DryFluid which is a special slide lubricant that although expensive lasts really well and is easy to apply and stays nice and clean. The best bike chain lubes keep your chain running smoothly, keep working even when it’s wet and don’t pick up crud. But can you get one bike chain lube that does it all or should you switch between wet and dry chain lubes according to the weather? And with a bewildering choice of chain lubes in any decent bike shop, which should you buy? Here are the best bike chain lubes we’ve found after tens of thousands of miles of all-weather riding.
ktache: I discovered something a few weeks back. I commute on some filthy tracks, canal routes and bridleways. Especially filthy recently. Cleaning the chain every night, wiping very well as I have taken the KMC advice on board and lubing. I need a wet lube and hve found over many years that Finish Line Cross Country has enough staying power for me, though I am interested in Rohloff’s offering. Some times the lube wasn’t enough, when the mud was particularly wet and there was also heavy rain.
Dry lube comes out of the bottle wet, commonly a fast-flowing liquid but once it dries it leaves a wax film on the chain. It’s this wax that provides the necessary lubrication, the liquid is simply the carrier for the wax.
Is it OK to use WD-40 on bike chain?
In summary, WD-40 is great for cleaning and degreasing your chain, but doesn’t work well as a lubricant. It will provide some small amount of lubrication, but nowhere near enough for your bike chain to run smoothly. It’s best to use a high-quality, bike-specific lubricant instead.
taberesc: Tried Rock ’n’ Roll Gold. Seems to require application before every ride. Even at that, the chain sqeak was unbareable. Have gone back to wet lube. Finish Line Wet is a tried and trusted fave.Which lube you choose comes down to the riding conditions and your maintenance habits. A dry lube doesn’t attract dirt and for that reason it’s a better lube for dry conditions, but the downside is that it often does not last as long as wet lube. So if you’re doing short rides in sunny weather on dry roads, a dry lube is a good pick. It has the benefit of keeping your drivetrain nice and clean too, you just have to remember to reapply it more frequently.
I really rate Prolink ProGold if you just want a liquid lube that’s clean and good in every condition. However, I’ve recently been using the Muc Off ceramic dry as I had about a bazillion samples to use up and I have to say I’d really forgotten how good it is both on and off road at this time of year.Silca’s Synergetic Drip Lube lasts for ages, is very clean, and will save you loads of money in drivetrain components. Yes, its RRP is £32 a bottle. But that will last you a year and save you many times that amount replacing prematurely-worn components.

peted76: I’ve recently been converted from Rock and Roll Gold dry lube (which I’ve used for ages and have thought was the best) to Fenwicks Stealth lube.. for a wet lube, I’m amazed at just how clean and well my chain runs using it.

Chris Hayes: I switched to waxing a few months ago after years of dirty, grunge-caked drive-trains. I’m using Silca’s super secret and will try molten wax next. I’ll never go back. Don’t care about the marginal gains, for me it’s about a clean drive train. The silence is a bonus. My plan was to see how far I could ride before chain noise became noticeable, but when I got to 200 miles it dawned on me that I was never going to get a grinding chain, because Smoove doesn’t work like that. While most wax lubes work by flaking off, taking the dirt with them, Smoove creates this long-lasting coating which doesn’t fall off (hence the long-lasting lubrication) but does hang on more to the dirt. Whether this is an issue for you depends on how often you like to clean your chain, but if you’re a frequent cleaner, then Smoove works very well in between cleans. Smoove is a thin, white liquid that needs applying to the rollers-only as you turn the chain to get a light, even coverage. Then you leave it overnight to dry (Smoove recommends this, though it says an hour is enough) and the next day, the chain appears completely dry. Only by touching it can you detect the presence of the lube, in a faint stickiness.I waxed 6 new chains and then just rewax when required (so far I’ve only needed to do the indoor trainer bike’s chain). Should I actually be cleaning off an outdoor chain before rewaxing?

I just run my chain through a Fenwick’s chain cleaning sponges, with a bit of their foam cassette cleaner, which is another great product. So I might give their Stealth lube a go once the Smoove runs out.So I switched to ’dry’ wax. Tried Finish Line which smelled nice and was spotless but if even a drop of rain fell it had to be reapplied. Am currently on Morgan Blue. The only downside is that in inclement weather it needs to be topped up every 2 days. But it cleans easily, no gunky black mess and it costs me 14 Euro for a 500 ml bottle.
Rock n Roll Absolute Dry Chain Lube is a super-clean-running formula designed primarily for the drier months, but several very soggy weeks suggest it’s one of the most tenacious. Unlike most dry/wax types, this doesn’t scab off and evict contaminant as you ride, but is designed not to collect grot in the first instance. Friction is extremely low, and transmissions feel crisp and silent. Staying prowess is surprisingly good by the standards of the genre.
bikespud: I cant stand the the grinding paste effect of wet lube once it’s got dirty. The degreasing then apply more sticky stuff makes no sense to me. I am a wax fan as there is less cleaning for sure. A big fan of White Lightning for years, but it’s expensive and hard to find now. Tried Squirt and loved how clean it was. Tried Smoove – It lasts longer but I don’t like the build up of black gunk between the chain rings. Testing Squirt Low Temp now, it’s thinner again, but supposed to last longer in cold weather. Will see what this winter brings… Come summer it’s probably back to Squirt again but no way anything oily.
